Today I carried on calling around all venues for EXACT Sports up-and-coming basketball and volleyball camps throughout the year. At this time it was actually very interesting to see which parts of the country were still taking action in protecting against COVID-19 and which states were clearly not. Overall this task was a good experience for me. It helped with my communication skills over the phone. As an Englishman living in the United States, it is common that people to misunderstand what I am saying because of my accent. Sometimes even misinterpret what I mean due to the way I say things. This project forced me to think about my communication skills. Although I have lived in the United States for nearly 8 years I have not lost my accent. I often catch myself using American terminology which makes me cringe inside. But one of the main things I have learned since living here is to slow down the speed at which I speak. As I went down the list of venues I had 3 columns to which I would make changes after connecting with the manager in charge of the facility. If for some reason the phone number given wouldn’t work or they did not answer I would simply leave a voice message and send a follow-up email with the written questions I was asking. From there I would make a note on the spreadsheet with the date attempted to connect. Today was very productive and I was happy with my progress.
